The Echidna & The Turtle

A long time ago the echidna and the turtle lived together as close friends. They hunted together, ate together and cared for each other. The Echidna and The Turtle describes what happens when the echidna leaves her baby to be looked after by her friend the turtle. The film demonstrates the important role that story telling has in passing down language and culture for the Kunwinjku people.

The Orphan Boy

The orphan boy lives with his tribe in western Arnhemland. When the tribe runs out of his favourite food, Water Lily Root, the orphan boy begins to cry. The old people try to keep him happy by giving him other types of bush food, but he does not like them, so he keeps on crying. When the sound of his crying wakes the Rainbow Serpent a series of events unfold that lead us through the creation of some Dreaming places special to the Kunwinjku People.

The students in Namarrkon Class from the Gunbalanya School planned and created these animations as part of a class project with animators from Gozer Media, a Melbourne based creative production studio. The students and animators designed and built the sets and characters together, then animated each scene and created the sound effects and narration. The DVD features both the films and a behind the scenes look at their creation, and is an excellent educational resource.
